Man dies trying to save dog from creek

A dog walker drowned in Pennypack Creek on May 30 after he and his pet ended up in the stream, which was swollen with fast-moving stormwater.

Fishermen spotted the body of Alexander Rus, 67, of the 7900 block of Algon Ave., at about 9:30 a.m. as the remains surfaced in the creek near the 8500 block of Verree Road. The Philadelphia police Marine Unit removed the victim from the water. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

While authorities were at the scene, a woman arrived and said that her husband was missing. He walked his dog in the park every day, she said. The woman had found the wet dog near her husband’s parked car. The drowning victim turned out to be the missing husband. ••
